WHO IS THIS KING OF GLORY
“In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God and the Word was God.”
(John 1:1-3)
“You have advanced from being a babe in Christ to a more mature believer when you recognize counterfeit and deceptive doctrines.” The matter of Christ’s deity is of utmost importance. The issue of who Jesus Christ is should never be taken lightly, and He must never be compared to any of history’s great “holy men.”
I was having a tremendously God-appointed conversation with an acquaintance, and Jesus was being glorified and adored. Everything was fine – there were a few doctrinal differences as we spoke, but the critical and eternal issue was: Who is He, this King of Glory?
Just when the conversation seemed most agreeable, and His name was being exalted, the “red flag” went up. “You know,” she said, “I have been doing much research lately, and I have found the teachings of Buddha, Mohammed, and many others to be very enlightening, just like Jesus.” “In fact,” she said, “I am beginning to see how these good teachers are so much like Jesus, just a different cultural slant. And surely, Jesus was not the only and final word….” She then asked how I felt.
Volumes have been written about the deity of Jesus, and my premise is to allow the Word of God to speak forth, not merely a man’s opinion.
I said, “Friend, It would be eternally inappropriate for me to water down the truth, that is God’s word, which you agree that He penned through Holy Spirit inspired men of God (2nd Peter 1:20). And since we agree that the Bible is the absolute basis for God’s truth to us, let us examine what His holy word says regarding the person of Jesus Christ. Besides, I love Him too much to compromise on this issue, and He loves you too much for you to misunderstand His true nature and character.
1/ Jesus led a sinless life: “He who knew no sin became sin on our behalf.” (2nd Cor. 5:21); “Jesus was tempted in every way, and yet did not sin.” (Heb.4:15)
2/ Jesus was far more than a “Good man.”
“Who being in very nature God…” (Phil. 2:6)
“But about the Son, He (God) says, “Your throne, O God, will last forever and ever.”” (Heb. 1:8)
3/Jesus is called God throughout Scripture: The Mighty God (Isa.9:6); The Word of God, (John 1:1 & Rev. 19:13,16); Immanuel or “God with us” in Isa.7:14 & Matthew 1:23; The Almighty (Rev.1:8); The I Am (John 8:58 & Exodus 3:14; My Lord and my God! (John 20:28); The Alpha and Omega: (Rev. 1:8,11 &17; 2:8, 21:6, 22:13).
The way I finally left the conversation with my friend was this: Please, never, compare Jesus with anyone or anything He has made. He will always stand supreme above all! He was and is the great I Am, the only way, truth and life, the Eternal God, and the only name under heaven for salvation. (Acts 4:12).
