WELL PLEASED
“The Son is the radiance of the Father’s glory, the very Image of God”
(Hebrews 1:3)
I was about 14 years old when my father gave me a motivational challenge that would influence my future. He challenged me to learn a complex guitar solo by his favorite ‘picker’, world-renowned Nashville great, Chet Atkins. He promised that he would buy me a guitar, just like Chet’s, if I did.
It took determination, dedication, and perseverance, but I did it. Soon thereafter, I held in my hands, a wonderful, Gretsch guitar. But I got something else, something I wasn’t necessarily looking for: my dad’s respect. Only God knows what that means to a boy. I wanted my dad to be proud of me.
In my late teens, I met someone else who wanted to please his Father, Jesus, the Son of God. During his life and ministry, He stated this objective: “I only live to please my Father.” He also said, “I do nothing lest I see the Father doing it.” He wanted to be like, and please his Daddy.
It is utterly incomprehensible to understand the divine, eternal nature of God’s relationship to His Son. However, it is interesting to note the familial bond that mortals can understand: a father loves a son, and a son loves and pleases his father. How wonderful that the Maker of heaven and earth, God the Father, wants an intimate, personal relationship with His children.
May we aim to please him today –
“This is My Beloved Son in Whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:17)
“He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you but to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8)
